Murad Alam is Professor of Dermatology, Otolaryngology, and Surgery; and Professor of Medical Social Science, at Northwestern University.  He received undergraduate and medical degrees from Yale University, and completed medical training at the University of Michigan and Columbia University, followed by a Masters in Clinical Investigation (MSCI) at Northwestern, and an MBA from Kellogg at Northwestern.  Author of over 300 scientific publications and editor of 25 books, Dr. Alam is Editor of Archives of Dermatological Research.  

Dr. Alam is director of CISTERN, an international collaboration developing clinical practice guidelines for soft-tissue tumors.  He initiated and continues to oversee the guidelines development program at the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery; he is the chair of the committee that is currently reviewing the guidelines development process for the American Academy of Dermatology; and he previously led the clinical practice guidelines process for the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery.  Dr. Alam is a member of the Methods Group of CS-COUSIN, an international organization supporting core outcome sets.   He chairs the IMPROVED group, which produces core outcome sets for skin cancer and cosmetic conditions.   Dr. Alam is a member of the board of the World Association of Medical Editors, where he heads the workgroup on the peer review process.

Dr. Alam is a member of the Nonmelanoma Skin Cancer Guidelines Panel of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network; delegate to the United States Pharmacopeia, which sets standards for medicines; member of the General and Plastic Surgery Devices Panel of the US FDA; advisor to the American Medical Association-Current Procedural Terminology Committee, which defines medical procedures; a member of the dermatology review committee of the American Council for Graduate Medical Education, which accredits and monitors postgraduate medical training for interns, residents, and fellows.

At GIN, Dr. Alam was the Scientific Committee Chair of the 2023 annual meeting in Glasgow.   He is also chair of the GIN’s Journal Committee, which helped launch the GIN journal (Clinical and Public Health Guidelines), chair of the GIN Revenue Streams Committee, which is investigating new ways to support GIN’s mission; and a member of the GIN Finance Committee and GIN Membership Committee.   Dr. Alam is chair of the GIN Guidelines in Medical Education (GIME) Workgroup, the Board Liaison to the GIN North America regional community, a member of the Chicago Guidelines Developer’s group, and an active member of the GIN Collaboration Workgroup.
