Elie Akl is a tenured Professor of Medicine at American University of Beirut (AUB), Lebanon, serving as the Vice Provost for Research. He is the founding head of the division of General Internal Medicine and Geriatrics and the founding director of the AUB GRADE Center, and the founding co-director of the Center for systematic reviews of health policy and systems research (SPARK).
He is internationally recognized for his expertise in evidence synthesis, practice guidelines, and conflicts of interest He published more than 550 peer-reviewed papers, including in the top general medicine journals. He has been listed as one of the “Highly Cited Researchers” yearly since 2015 (top 0.1% of scientists globally).
He is a member the GRADE executive committee, and of the board of trustees for the Guidelines International Network. At the World Health Organization (WHO), he is the co-chair of the Expert Advisory Panel on Drug Evaluation (Essential Medicines List) and a member of the Advisory Panel on International Clinical Trials Registry Platform (ICTRP). He is also the methodologist for many guideline development groups.
