Maurizio A. LEONE, MD, is consultant at the Scientific Direction of the Clinical Research Institute IRCCS “Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza” in San Giovanni Rotondo, Italy where he served as Director of the Neurology Unit 2014-2022. He is also Consultant at the Lab of neurological Diseases, dept of Neurosciences, Istituto Farmacologico “Mario Negri” in Milan. He took his medical degree at the University of Torino in 1980. After one year as Guest Researcher at the Neuroepidemiology, Branch, NINCDS, NIH, Bethesda, USA (1986-7), he worked in the Neurology dept. of the Novara University hospital, where he headed the Multiple Sclerosis Centre. Dr. Leone authored 226 papers in peer-reviewed journals in the area of neuroepidemiology –including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy alcohol-related neurological diseases- and of evidence-based Neurology.
He was member of the Scientific Committee (2011-24) of the European Academy of Neurology, where he founded the EAN guideline production group which he headed until 2024. For this activity he was awarded the EAN Service Award in 2024. He organized several courses of Evidence-based Neurology in Italy and Eastern Europe. Dr. Leone has served as Associate Editor for the European Journal of Neurology from 2006 to 2019.
