Prof. Joseph L. Mathew is Head of Pediatric Pulmonology at the Postgraduate Institute ofMedical Education and Research (PGIMER) Chandigarh, India. He also leads the AdvancedCentre for Evidence Based Child Health (ACEBCH) at Chandigarh.
Dr. Mathew’s main focus is the translation of research evidence to health-care practice in developing countries. He contributed significantly towards capacity building efforts for evidence-informed decision-making through the SIGNET programme (2009-14). He also developed the KNOW ESSENTIALS tool (2011) for evidence-informed decision-making in resource-limited settings. Dr. Mathew has recently developed a unique model of creating evidence-based clinical practice guidelines, without external funding; which can be emulatedin diverse resource-constrained settings across the world. He was conferred the Fellowship of GIN (FGIN) in 2024- the very first year of the inception of this honour.
Dr. Mathew is an active member of GIN since 2010. He served as a member of the GINBoard of Trustees for two terms (2019-21, 2021-23), the Founder Chair of the GIN Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMIC) Working Group (2015-2021), and Chair of the GIN Membership Committee (2019-21). He is a founding member of the South Asian Cochrane Network Centre (currently designated as Cochrane India Network). He has served on theBoard of Health Technology Assessment International (HTAi) and was the Founder Chair of the HTAi Developing Countries Interest Subgroup (2008-13). He has been a Chair/member of several committees of GIN, HTAi, Cochrane, World Health Organization, Evidence SynthesisTaxonomy Initiative (ESTI), COVID RecMap Project, Evidence Synthesis InfrastructureCollaborative (ESIC), Indian Council of Medical Research, and Society for Medical DecisionMaking (SMDM).
