Roberta James PhD is Programme Lead at the Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (SIGN), where she leads work to ensure that national clinical guidelines for NHS Scotland are current, rigorous, relevant and accessible. With more than 20 years’ experience in evidence-based guideline development, she has played a leading role in strengthening methods, improving processes and supporting the timely production and dissemination of high-quality recommendations. A central theme of her work is making guidance meaningful and usable for both professional and public audiences, so that trusted evidence can translate into better decisions and improved patient care.
Her current focus is on finding innovative and collaborative ways to reduce the cost and burden of guideline development. This includes reducing waste of time, effort and resources; automating selected steps in the guideline development process; reusing existing material; and strengthening collaboration — a principle that has been central to GIN’s philosophy from the outset.
Roberta began her career in research science following undergraduate and postgraduate study at the University of Edinburgh. Before joining SIGN, she spent 10 years as a research scientist at the Medical Research Council Human Genetics Unit in Edinburgh, the Roslin Institute and the Cancer Research UK laboratories at the University of Edinburgh.
Her contribution to the Guidelines International Network (GIN) has been substantial and sustained. She joined the Board of Trustees in September 2020, served as Vice-Chair, and was elected Chair in September 2025. As Chair, Roberta is committed to building a closer relationship between the Board of Trustees and GIN’s Working Groups, helping align their projects with the GIN strategy and the evolving needs of members. She is also keen to make the extensive resources developed by the Working Groups more visible and accessible, particularly for newer and less experienced guideline developers. By connecting people, methods and practical resources, she aims to help GIN continue to grow as a vibrant, member-focused organisation with a lasting impact on guideline development internationally.
Roberta has also contributed to GIN’s Finance Committee, the 2023 Conference Scientific Committee and chaired the 2025 Conference Committee. In addition, SIGN co-hosted the 2018 GIN Conference in Manchester with the National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE). Roberta is also involved in the GIN Updating Guidelines Working Group and Implementation Working Group
