Ilkka Kunnamo, MD, PhD, developed the original idea of Evidence-Based Medicine Guidelines, a comprehensive electronic point-of-care guideline database published by Duodecim Medical Publications Ltd., Finland, and served as its editor-in-chief between 1988 and 2008. Until 2023 he served as the editor-in-chief of the international version, which has been translated into 10 languages. He served in the first editorial team of the Finnish national Current Care guidelines. Since 1986 he has worked as general practitioner at Karstula in Central Finland. In 2009 he was appointed adjunct professor of general practice at the University of Helsinki. He led the development of a comprehensive multilingual decision support service (Evidence-Based Medicine Electronic Decision Support, EBMEDS, utilizing coded data from electronic health records and providing patient-specific reminders, interactive algorithms, smart questionnaires, and population health tools. In 2014 – 2018 he served as chair of the WONCA (World organization of family physicians) Working Party on eHealth. He has published research papers in informatics, guidelines, clinical decision support, interoperability of medical knowledge, polypharmacy, rheumatology, gastroenterology, and sinusitis. He is a member of the GRADE working group. He has served as a member of the Executive Board of DynaMed, EBSCO Health, an as an Editorial Advisor of BioMed Central, and a board member of the Scientific Knowledge Accelerator Foundation. He has given presentations at nearly all GIN conferences. He is a founding member of the GIN Multimorbidity Working Group and the Implementation Working Group, and an active member of GIN Tech. He was awarded the Najoua Mlika-Cabanne Innovation Award in 2016.
