Background:
Individuals and organizations increasingly use social media to disseminate information. Previous reports have described the risks and benefits of this practice for patients and providers (1, 2), and user-generated data suggest that use of social media is increasing in popularity among health care organizations (3). However, we know little about how commonly or for what purposes hospitals use social media.
